Ah, the apple orchard on an 85-degree day. I’m itching for fall weather, though I know we’ll likely jump straight to winter. Post-Summer is at least good for Shit We Made from the last vegetable garden harvest.
And Spooky season has begun! Where do you stand on the great candy corn debate? Vote in our poll below.
Cinnamon Toast Crunch pancakes // Buddy's, Jersey City
I’ve been craving Cinnamon Toast Crunch for weeks. Buddy’s is known for its cereal pancakes, which truly satisfy my cravings. The cereal is piled on top and baked into each pancake. I ordered the sauces on the side, which I think was right because the vanilla sauce would have been too sweet. -NB
Freddo Cappucino // Café Leon Dore, SoHo
You know my go-to order is an iced cappuccino, so I was excited about the Aimé Leon Dore Freddo Cappucino. TL;DR: It looks WAY better than it tastes. The espresso was so bitter and burnt that I had to drown it in Splenda, which is a crime for a $7 coffee. -NB
Korean Cheesesteak Sandwich // The Good Fork, Red Hook, Brooklyn
The name says it all on this east-meets-west comfort dish. Gochujang marinated short rib with American cheese and kimchi mayo on a roll. It also comes with four generously sized pickle chips. The meal paired nicely with The Good Fork's informal but cozy backyard on an early fall evening. I scarfed down half of it before snapping the photo.
🍏 Apple Crisp // Terhune Orchards, Princeton, NJ
This was a giant tin of baked apples rather than a pie, which I prefer. It was about five pounds of sweet and caramelly apples topped with a crumble. Bringing a pie makes you the MVP of Sunday dinner. -NB
Ratatouille by Nicole B.
This was my first attempt at a ratatouille & it was a non-traditional approach based on this TikTok recipe, where I cooked down the red peppers, garden tomatoes, shallots, garlic, and jalapeno in the oven and blended them as the base. It was a great use of eggplants & peppers from my mom’s garden and farmer’s market produce. I also added feta in the middle because veggies alone didn’t feel like enough. The intricate design made it taste even better.
Halloween trail mix by Toby D.
It’s spooky season! This DIY mix is more a treat than trick. The best part is you can use your personal faves; essentially, any combo is delicious. As you make your selections, don’t forget to find the right balance of salty & sweet. I highly recommend Trader Joe’s salted caramel chips, and don’t forget the pumpkin mellowcremes.
