I’ve been mourning summer for weeks, but the true end is finally here. Sunday marks the first day of Autumn, so I guess I’ll give up on summer things and accept trying to make dinner and put out pumpkins and eat squash? I’m looking forward to maple lattes (iced, of course). However, not so much for sweater weather.
Dig the new design? Shout out to Sean S. for the updated shit!
Give him props in the comments!
Tomato and cream cheese bagel / Apollo Bagels, West Village
I walked up to the new WV location around noon on a weekday and there was no wait (I probably wouldn’t have waited if the line was wrapped around the barriers they have outside). I loved the everything bagel — a solid amount of seeds and both crunchy and airy. It was still hot when I bit into it and I loved the seasoning and light olive oil on the tomato. I don’t love the open-faced sandwich and only after I devoured half did I realize I should have closed the sandwich. -NB
Vanilla Almond Latte / Fellini Cafe, West Village
This is really about the straw. The latte was great, loved their vanilla, but I couldn’t finish it because TWO straws deteriorated into oblivion. Are the plastic straws really the problem? The cup is plastic. Someone please explain. -NB
Elote / El Ranchero Taqueria, Jersey City
The burritos we had were very good (chicken and steak), but this corn was the star of the show. I could have eaten about three more. -NB
Jamón pan con tomate / Mercado Little Spain, Hudson Yards
Mmmm… this was so good. Hot and crunchy with quality jamón. It was a great snack for between meals. The Little Spain Mercado seemed really fun and there was a great sangria happy hour filled with a post-work crowd. -NB
Roasted Grape Salad / Zou Zou’s, Hudson Yards
A great salad with a flavorful dressing and crispy breadcrumbs. It would have been better if the roasted grapes were off the vine. I am still shocked they gave me a whole bunch of grapes. -NB

Brown butter corn cookies from Easy Gay Oven
I followed Easy Gay Oven’s recipe for these cookies and they were really tasty. I felt there could have been more corn flavor, but I may have overdone it with the lime zest sugar, which made them taste overly sugar cookie-like. I’d add a little more corn flour next time and less sugar. A great combo of chewy and crisp. -NB
Green smoothie al la Wishbone Kitchen
This smoothie does not taste as green as it looks thanks to mango. Watch Wishbone Kitchen’s vid for the breakdown. It’s mango, spinach, coconut water, chia seeds, hemp seeds, and matcha collagen powder. I don’t love coconut water, so swapped it with vanilla almond Malk and I used a combo of matcha powder with a sample of collagen powder (I don’t think this does anything for taste).
✨ Las Californias Gin Club, The Winslow
✨ Veloce Sandwiches, Jersey City
✨ Guapo’s Coffee House, Long Beach Island
That’s some cool new shit Sean S.!!
Why have I never thought to close an open-face sandwich 😂
